The weekly death toll from the ongoing pandemic stayed steady and high as the total number of dead Arkansans was at 35.
The previous week it was at 34 and the week before that it was 24.
The total number of dead Arkansans is now at 11,689
As for the national trends, the forecast numbers from the Centers for Disease Control are below and through Aug. 20.
The forecasts for both weekly and total death counts are on the upswing. The reason isn’t complicated, cases are on the rise now and death rates are a lagging indicator.
If you don’t want to get sick and die, there’s some things you can do:

Maumelle's Candace Owens inducted into Phi Kappa Phi
Candace Owens of Maumelle was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Owens was initiated at Emporia State University.
Owens is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

After a successful debut in 2021, The Jackson T. Stephens Cup announced its field earlier this week for the second-year competition being held at Seminole Golf Club, Juno Beach, Fla., Oct. 9 -12. Maumelle Council member Steve Mosley provides the following information about municipal candidate filings that start next week.
I'd like to make Maumelle residents aware that this November's elections will include a number of elected Maumelle City positions this year including Mayor, City Clerk, City Attorney, and the position 2 Council member in each of Maumelle's 4 wards.
As I understand it, the filing period for these offices is Aug. 3. through noon Aug. 10. If you have questions about what ward you are in, what must be provided at filing, or have other questions, feel free to call me as a resource at 501-240-6700.
Official information can be obtained from the administrative office at the Pulaski County Court Clerk.
Casino Night this Saturday in Maumelle
The Maumelle Area Chamber of Commerce will have its 8th annual Casino Night at Maumelle Country Club this Saturday, July 30.
It will start at 6 p.m. and registration is $40 for chamber members and $45 for non-members at the door.
Heavy appetizers will be served and will include one drink and playing chips for blackjack, roulette, craps and poker. The event will also feature a cash bar and you’ll be able to buy more chips to keep playing. Entertainment is provided by Celebration’s Events and the night will also feature a silent and live auction.

Maumelle Planning Commission to meet tonight
Houses, houses, houses and more houses are on the agenda for tonight’s meeting of the Maumelle Planning Commission.
The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. and be held at City Hall. The online agenda and packet can be viewed by clicking here.
There’s no old business on the agenda and the first item of new is a doozy with the proposed rezoning of the Stone Canyon Addition.
Located at 14005 Old Maumelle Road, the 65 acre property is south of Hwy. 365 and north of the railroad tracks. It was annexed into the city in 2021 at the owner’s request.
According to the provided packet, “The proposed rezoning would accomplish this with a potential for a mix of duplexes, triplexes, and garden apartments, etc.”
“This” being “a mix of medium density housing and village center housing.”
An old quarry on the property would become “bike trails” and other “recreational uses.”
If the rezoning is approved, it would become R-2 and allow for 16 units or less per acre, while not all the property is designated as residential, the development would mean hundreds and hundreds of new homes, but an exact number wasn’t provided in the packet. A map of the location is below.
In other new home news: the Cypress Bend Revised Development Plan, located at 9000 White Oak Crossing is also on the agenda.
According to the packet, that property “as envisioned as a gated private enclave” but that’s not the case now as the developer, “wishes to sell to Rausch Coleman developers, who are buying subdivisions in the area for building their model homes.”
The development would have 143 proposed lots on a little over 17 acres. An example of a model home that Rausch Coleman would build there is below.
While planning staff recommended a “do-pass” to the commission, that would be against the wishes of the public comments on the project as all were opposed to the development.
The meeting is open to the public and will be available to watch on the city’s YouTube channel.
Baptist Health to have new clinic in Rose City
Baptist Health and the city of North Little Rock will have a groundbreaking on Monday, Aug. 1, for a new medical facility at the intersection of Hwy. 70 and 4120 Baucum Drive.
The facility is a joint partnership between the city and Baptist Health and the groundbreaking will start at 10 a.m.
It has been a long time coming, North Little Rock Mayor Terry Hartwick said.
“We have been working with Baptist on this clinic since early January 2021, right after I took office,” Hartwick said. “Growing up in Rose City, I remember being treated at a local clinic for a potential serious injury as a young child. Every citizen in North Little Rock should have access to great health care.”
The facility will be designed by North Little Rock’s Taggart Architects and the builder will be Maumelle’s Alessi Keyes Construction.
Construction will start this fall with an estimated timeline to completion of 14 months. The project will cost $5 million and be a total of 5,000 square feet.
“In addition to advancing Baptist Health's mission of providing quality services with Christian compassion, we believe this will help improve health care access for residents in the Rose City neighborhood so they can get the care they need closer to home,” said Troy Wells, President and CEO of Baptist Health.
