A Very Merry Maumelle continues
A Very Merry Maumelle started last Saturday and continues this Saturday and concludes on Saturday, Dec. 16.
This Saturday’s Mistletoe Market will be held at Center on the Lake.
So no worries about the weather there.
Christine Gronwald, who serves on the Maumelle City Council, is the Holiday Committee chair while Ashley Norris with Bella Rustina Modern Vintage Market is the Co-Chair.
“The committee was able to secure the Center on the Lake for the Mistletoe Market so all activities [this Saturday] will be indoors,” Gronwald said previously. “The committee is very proud to be hosting 33 vendors for the inaugural year for Maumelle Mistletoe Market. There will be five food trucks with food varieties including hot dogs, tacos, nachos, and more! The first 25 shoppers to arrive at the event on December 9th will receive a special event swag bag.”
So get there early. More details below.
Saturday: Maumelle Mistletoe Market 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
All the beautiful lights and the Maumelle Christmas tree will remain in place throughout the month of December for the merriment of our Maumelle residents. The first 25 shoppers to arrive for the Mistletoe Market will receive a swag bag with fun treasures donated by area businesses including the Maumelle Area Chamber of Commerce.
Holiday music will play in the background as patrons visit 30 vendor booths that include categories such as; candles and room spray, kitchen gadgets, makeup and skin care products, handmade gifts, home decor, food items, and so much more. Shoppers can also commemorate the evening by taking a photo with our Photo 360 that takes a picture as it moves around its subject. Owner of Bella Rustina Modern Vintage Market, Ashley Norris, is providing her equipment and time to offer this extra special opportunity to event attendees.
As shoppers work up an appetite, they can choose from five food trucks that will provide BBQ, tacos, hot dogs and nachos among other items. Guests will be given a raffle ticket upon entry where they can enter to win door prizes given throughout the evening. While this event is open to anyone in Maumelle, we expect many will enjoy making this a “Girls Night Out” while they check everyone off their Christmas list.
Saturday, Dec. 16: Holiday Movie in the Park sponsored by The Summit Church 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Maumelle residents will come together to watch the cartoon movie version of The Grinch on a large screen as they enjoy the lake and holiday decorations surrounding them.

Not to mention Buddy the Elf and Santa will be there. Summit Church is among the sponsors of “A Very Merry Maumelle” holiday events.

Sugar Llamas coming to Maumelle Boulevard
As franchises go, Sugar Llamas isn’t the biggest.
There’s 10, mostly in the Tulsa-metro area, along with one near the Sam’s Club in west Little Rock at 1121 S. Bowman Road. There’s also another coming early next year to Maumelle Boulevard.
But, if you like fresh donuts, and who doesn’t, Sugar Llamas might be on your list for best franchises and it also has fancy coffee and ice cream but it is the donuts, fried fresh to order and then topped with various accoutrements, to amp up the sugar explosion.
On a recent visit, seen below, cinnamon sugar, along with the Turtle, chocolate and caramel and the Boss Hog, with bacon and maple, were sampled.
Cooked to order, the size is more akin to a donut hole but they pack a sugary punch.
With that, the new location will be located at 12007 Maumelle Boulevard, and Lynnlee Vance is the franchise owner.
She said that it will, “likely” open in February.
Vance added that a friend opened up a location in the Tulsa Hills neighborhood and “we loved the concept of a family-friendly store with an all day menu and the wide appeal in a fun environment.”
She said that Sugar Llamas is a “one-stop shop for drinks, ice cream, and mini donuts, which is a unique option to have something for everyone in the group.”
So those with picky eaters should rejoice.
Hours at a Sugar Llamas are seasonal with winter hours – December through February – are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with Friday starting at 7 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m. with Saturday running from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday starting at 8 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m.
That’s all subject to change, Vance added.
With a menu as large and varied, what is her go to order?
And while that is up to the customer, “we would say our donuts because they are made fresh and hot, as ordered all day long and customized with many icing and topping choices.”
But, “we do have some regulars who come in to order special items, which we make to order as well,” she said. “One customer comes in for a peanut butter chocolate shake which is not on our menu. Another asked us to make a chocolate shake, but made with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. We try to accommodate special requests when it is possible.”
Of course, some don’t come for the donuts.
The coffee is a bit of a draw.
“All of our drinks can be made hot or cold and we can make kid-friendly versions of all of them without the espresso,” Vance said. “Two of our winter flavors are very popular – caramel brulee latte and peppermint mocha latte.”
Vance said the choices on our visit were among “our most popular” and, “the smores and cookies and cream are also frequent chocolate options. For those who like fruit flavors, the bam berry (lemon and blueberry) and cherry bomb (cherry and chocolate) are popular. Kids usually love the Flintstone (vanilla topped with fruity pebbles)-it is colorful and crunchy.”
She said, as it is Christmas time, the donuts can also be had in holiday themes and things like gingerbread sprinkles are available.
Sausage kolaches are also for sale, if one is looking for something more savory.
Sugar Llamas are a family-owned and operated business, Vance added. “We love for small groups and families to come in and hang out and enjoy our store, spending time together. We have had some of the best customers and really enjoy being able to meet each and provide the best possible experience.”
Now suppose you have a tween or child in your life that loves llamas. You don’t know, maybe there’s a show? But they do and this is where Sugar Llamas really delivers.
There’s a llama wall and it is essentially a selfie station.
The wall has llama wallpaper and there’s a five foot tall stuffed llama, just waiting to have a photo made. There’s also llama art on the walls and it all makes sense, at least for the llama obsessed.
Path to Abstraction to open at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts on Saturday
As artists go, Picasso is among the most famous of the 20th century.
And, luckily enough, Picasso will be on display starting this Saturday at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock.
On display is “Fan, Salt Box, Melon” a 1909 painting by Piccaso that is on loan from the Cleveland Museum of Art. It, along with Georges Braque’s “Guitar and Bottle of Marc on a Table” a 1930 painting.
The pair are the featured works in “Path to Abstraction: Picasso, Braque, and Cubism’s Impact on Modern Art.
It will remain on display through April 14, 2024.
Picasso and Braque are, according to art historians, developed “Cubism” and “Synthetic Cubism” as styles adopted by other artists.
“Cubism was a prismatic mirror that so much of 20th-century art needed to pass through in order to question space, illusion, and even more broadly, the true purpose of painting,” said Dr. Catherine Walworth, the Jackye and Curtis Finch, Jr., Curator of Drawings at the museum.
The pieces are in Little Rock because the museum loaned to Cleveland, Odilon Redon’s Andromeda and Diego Rivera’s Dos Mujeres, while the museum here was being renovated. Those pieces have since made their way back home and are back on view here.
There’s a total of 25 works that make up the museum’s collection.
Coming later this month, Dec. 19 to be specific, Risa Hricovsky, an artist based in Knoxville, Tennessee, will go display with “Then Is Now.”
It runs through April 28, 2024 and features new work produced for the museum and includes a “site-specific painting and sculpture installation.”
Admission to the museum is always free.
