LITTLE ROCK – It was a late-arriving crowd on Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium for the Arkansas-UAPB game.
Maybe it was the heat or maybe it was the bottleneck of a security checkpoint as every fan had to pass through a metal detector, then be screened individually like they were about to board an airplane.
Attendance was announced as 40,127 with a capacity crowd being 54,120 and those in attendance got a show as Arkansas raced past UAPB, 70-0, in a game that was decided early after the Hogs jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Arkansas scored on every possession, then kept the offense going into the second quarter with touchdowns on the second quarter’s three drives. All in all, Arkansas scored seven touchdowns on seven drives. Arkansas ended up scoring a touchdown on each of its 10 drives.
One obvious standout was quarterback Taylen Green, a Boise State transfer and the best import from there since Houston Hutt. Green, listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, finished the game with 229 yards and two touchdowns passing with another 88 yards and two touchdowns rushing.
Green showed a deft touch throwing and some real wheels getting around and past the overmatched UAPB defense. It was all in the first half as Green didn’t see any playing time in the second half, not that there was much reason.
In fairness to the Golden Lions, they’re a division below Arkansas, and while they were clearly overmatched, it didn’t help that they were playing with 54 newcomers, 19 freshmen and 35 transfers.
Defensively, Maumelle’s Nico Davillier drew the start at left defensive end for Arkansas and finished with five tackles, to lead the team’s effort. A former football and basketball standout for the Hornets, Davillier was stout against the run, while also putting some big pressure off the edge.
He’s the second Maumelle product to start for Arkansas, joining Andrew Chamblee, who was on the all-SEC freshman team last season after getting six starts for the Hogs. Chamblee transferred to SMU this past spring.
North Little Rock’s Quincy Rhodes Jr. also saw action at defensive end, spelling Landon Jackson, who is considered a top NFL prospect. Rhodes had one tackle and two quarterback hurries
Arkansas had 444 yards of total offense in the first half, to UAPB’s 76. For the game Arkansas finished with 687 yards of total offense with 408 yards passing and 279 yards rushing.
Arkansas, now 1-0 on the season, travels to Oklahoma State next Saturday for an 11 a.m. kick against the Cowboys that will be televised on ABC.
UAPB, now 0-1, will keep the in-state flavor going and host Arkansas Baptist next Saturday in a 7 p.m. game
View from the press box
War Memorial was very War Memorial-y as the press box had no running water for much of the game and it meant that the bathrooms were out of order. The air conditioning also seemed to be overwhelmed, so it was a hot and humid night inside and out.
The best part of the game was the halftime show as UAPB’s band performed, then were joined by the Arkansas band for a Whitney Houston song. Click the video below for a quick look.
