Basketball: CAC teams open conference play 2-0

From an uncharacteristic 0-3 start this season, Steve Quattlebaum’s Lady Mustangs have won five of their last seven games and stand 2-0 in the 3A-6.

The Lady Mustangs notched their first win of the season over Mountain View, 53-52, then lost to Melbourne, 53-29. They then beat Maumelle Charter, 64-24; and Sheridan, 72-53; before falling to Star City, 38-29. They opened conference play with back-to-back wins over Episcopal Collegiate, 44-40; and Lisa Academy West, 71-18.

Riley Bryant and Ava Knoedl have led the charge for CAC.

Against Mountain View, Bryant notched 24 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Knoedl added 22 points and three steals.

Against Melbourne, Bryant had 10 points.

Against Maumelle Charter, Bryant led again with 19 points. Knoedl added 16 points and four assists and two steals; Livian Burton recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Against Sheridan, Bryant starred with 28 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Knoedl added 23 points, six rebounds and five assists; Burton turned in another double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and two steals.

Against Star City, Bryant had 15 points and eight rebounds; Knoedl added 10 points and two steals.

Against Episcopal, Burton led the Lady Mustangs with 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Knoedl added 14 points and nine rebounds; Bryant had 12 points.

Against Lisa Academy, Jaydyn Smith led with 16 points; Bryant added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Knoedl had 12 points, six assists and four steals.

Before taking off until after Christmas, the Lady Mustangs will play a non-conference game with Kirby on Friday.

Matt Hall’s Mustangs are off to a 7-2 start.

After a season-opening loss to Farmington, 84-61; the Mustangs reeled off three straight wins: over Lamar, 67-56; Pulaski County HomeSchool, 84-79; and Scott Charter, 81-26. They lost to Maumelle Charter, 59-54; then started another win streak (Baptist Prep, 51-50; Drew Central, 52-34; and 3A-6 conference victories over Episcopal Collegiate, 68-58; and Lisa Academy West, 54-30).

The Mustangs will play Kirby on Friday and will resume conference play Jan. 4 with an early showdown of 2-0 teams at Jacksonville Lighthouse.
