Covid-19 cases around the DeWitt programs have forced the postponement of Friday’s scheduled games until Jan. 30.
The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs are thus off until traveling to Palestine-Wheatley on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
“I think it’s kind of catching up to us and getting around,” girls coach Steve Quattlebaum said. “I noticed a lot of conferences didn’t get their full complement of games last week. Hardly any had their full slate of games.”
Palestine-Wheatley is 5-8 overall and 2-2 in 3A-6 conference play. Q’s crew improved to 8-0 and 5-0 with wins against Helena-West Helena, 74-55; and Dollarway, 78-14.
“Helena was a pretty good game,” Quattlebaum said. “We came out kind of slow, and they beat us in the first quarter (14-10), but we had a really good second quarter, outscoring them 26-7, after we did a nice job pressing. We outscored them in the third, 21-12. We didn’t put the mercy rule on them, but we got close.”
Senior Bethany Dillard, who has signed with Union University, had a big game with 38 points (including 10 of 10 free throws), nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Ava Knoedl and Riley Bryant added 13 points apiece.
He said coaches used the two-hour, 15-minute bus ride as a learning experience.
“We tried to tell them it’s kind of like what it’s going to be like later in the state tournament,” Quattlebaum said. “If they do like they have in the past, they could put a state tournament no telling where, and you’d have to drive. We’re probably not going to stay in hotels, so it was good practice to have a long bus ride, get off the bus and play a good game. After the first quarter, we put three pretty good quarters together.”
Despite Dillard’s absence because of quarantine, the Lady Mustangs blistered Dollarway with a 34-1 first quarter. CAC led by 53-2 at the half and 69-12 heading into the fourth.
Playing little more than the first quarter, Knoedl hit seven of eight field goals to lead the Lady Mustangs with 17 points. Off the bench, Peyton Gaston scored 12; Avery Lillard and Livian Burton added 11 apiece. Lake Ramey grabbed 11 rebounds.
