It could have been Josh Denton’s last high school basketball game.
In a win or go home contest, Maumelle defeated Beebe, 73-53, on Tuesday night to advance to the semifinals of the 5A-Central district tournament.
Denton did his part. The 6-foot-5 guard and college prospect led all scorers with 22 points, while fellow senior Darvis Rasberry added 11. Junior guard Carl Daughtery Jr. was also in double figures with 14 points.
Maumelle will now travel to Little Rock Parkview for the district semifinals at 6 p.m. on Thursday. This will just be the second time the two teams have played as a previous regular season matchup was cancelled because of Covid concerns.
The winner moves on to the district finals at 6 p.m. on Friday with the top seed hosting. The No. 1 seed is Sylvan Hills and the Bears are on the top half of the bracket. The loser will go to a consolation game, also at 6 p.m. on Friday.
The pair of games are to determine seeding for next week’s 5A state tournament in Hot Springs.
Maumelle is in, but when the Hornets play is up to the team and its performance this week. The Central this year is paired against the East and, worth noting, the district champ and the consolation game loser are in the top half of the bracket, while the other two teams, the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, are in the bottom half. Given the Central’s strength this season, there’s real potential for conference rivals to face off in the semifinals.
