The first full day of high school state basketball tournaments saw a little bit of everything from a shocking upset to an overtime thriller.
Let’s start with the upset.
And an upset it was as Vilonia, the No. 3 seed from the 5A-West, knocked off Maumelle, 70-60 in the 5A state tournament at Sheridan.
The Hornets were, going into the tournament, a heavy favorite to make at least the semifinals as they had beaten Vilonia twice this season but never led in the game as Vilonia started hot and stayed that way.
Vilonia is now 17-10 and will play Pine Bluff at 5:30 p.m., today while Maumelle’s season is over at 23-5. The other losses were twice to Little Rock Parkview and then Class 6A Bentonville and nationally ranked North Little Rock.

The overtime thriller was Central Arkansas Christian as the Lady Mustangs lost to Centerpoint, 64-63, in extra time in the Class 3A girls state tournament being played at Harrison.
CAC (22-11) had led much of the game as Centerpoint (29-2) had to rally down the stretch as it was 55-55 at the end of regulation.
Junior forward Riley Bryant led all scorers with 30 points while senior guard Ava Knoed, who has signed with Mississippi College, had 15 points.

In the completely expected, North Little Rock rolled past Cabot, 68-37, in a quarterfinals game of the Class 6A girls state tournament as coach Daryl Fimple pulled his starters and rested them in the second half.
North Little Rock (25-4) had already beaten Cabot twice this season as the Lady Panthers ended the year at 16-13.
North Little Rock will play in the semifinals at noon on Saturday at Little Rock Southwest.
