The March 5 primary and judicial elections are now less than three weeks away and the signs of the election are everywhere.
Literally, you can’t drive almost anywhere in central Arkansas and not see a yard sign on the side of the road. There’s also a near constant stream of mailers filling up your mailbox as well.
Judicial races are state-wide and any Pulaski County resident can vote for local judges.
Notable races include:
Arkansas Supreme Court, Chief Justice, Position 1: Currently held by Mountain View’s Dan Kemp but he’s retiring making the seat open.
Candidates are:
Justice Rhonda Wood
Justice Karen Baker
Justice Barbara Womack Webb
Jay Martin
Wood, Baker and Webb already serve on the state Supreme Court, while Martin, a lawyer, is a former state representative who served North Little Rock.
If Wood, Baker or Webb were to win the race, their replacement would be appointed by Gov. Sarah Sanders, and that person would serve until 2026, or until the next election.
Arkansas Supreme Court, Associate Justice, Position 2: This seat is currently held by interim Justice Cody Hiland, who was appointed by Sanders last year after the death of Robin Wynne. Hiland is ineligible to run for the seat.
Candidates are:
Justice Courtney Hudson
Circuit Judge Carlton D. Jones
Hudson, who already serves as a Justice and was mostly recently re-elected in 2018 but for a different seat. If she wins, her replacement would also be appointed by Sanders, but if she loses, she will continue to serve in her current role. Jones is also a judge in Texarkana.
Arkansas Court of Appeals, Associate Judge, District 6, Position 1: Rita Gruber is retiring making the seat open.
Candidates include:

Circuit Judge Casey Tucker
Pam Hathaway
McNulty and Hathaway are both Little Rock lawyers, while Tucker is a judge.
Circuit Judge – District 6, Division 17, Subdistrict 6.2: Currently held by Judge Mackie Pierce, who is running for another judgeship, making the seat open.

One of the more tightly contested races, Kamps is a deputy prosecuting attorney with broad local support while Pierce is a judge and also enjoys broad local support. Outside of the state Supreme Court, this might be the tightest election to watch on March 5.
State District Judge, District 31, Little Rock 2: Currently held by Vic Fleming, who is (DOWN eight letters) retiring? Correct. Fleming will continue creating crossword puzzles for the New York Times, among others. He's (UP, 11 letters) fascinating? We’ll allow it.

Robert Tellez
Wright is already a judge, while Tellez is a lawyer in North Little Rock and expect another close race.
Early voting
Early voting begins across Pulaski County next Tuesday, Feb. 20, and will continue through Monday, March 4.
If any election goes to a runoff, it will be held April 2. With early voting for it beginning on March 26.
