Central Arkansas Christian’s football Mustangs will attempt to right their 2-4A ship Friday when they travel to Mills University Studies in Little Rock.
Tommy Shoemaker’s team is 2-2 after opening conference play last week with a 50-20 loss to Clinton.
“We had our chances; we just didn’t make the plays we needed to make,” the coach said. “We have to play better on defense. More important than who we play, we’ve got to tackle better and not beat ourselves. Sometimes the other night, we didn’t do that.”
It could be a tough assignment. Mills is 4-0 this fall, including 1-0 in 2-4A play following last week’s 56-33 win over Bald Knob. Non-conference wins came over Hope, 56-38; Jacksonville, 36-20; and Forrest City, 40-6.
The Comets won five games last year (5-7), matching their win total from 2016-19. Mills was winless in 2018 and ‘19. The Mustangs won last year’s matchup, 20-14.
“We stopped them basically inside the 10 on the last play of the game,” Shoemaker said. “My son sacked their quarterback. They were very competitive even though their record wasn’t great.
“But they were very talented. They have really good skill players. They’ve had a couple of nice additions to their team, and they’re playing really well and kind of on a roll right now. But Bald Knob played them pretty tough (last week) and had a chance, which probably surprised a lot of people.”
Mills was picked to finish fifth in the 2-4A this fall, according to Hooten’s Arkansas Football’s preseason poll of league coaches.
Shoemaker said the Mustangs would need to iron out a few wrinkles from last week.
“Offensively, we’ve got to get Tyler (Williams, the senior quarterback) back on track,” he said. “We got behind last week and had to throw the ball more than we wanted to. We need to be able to run the football.”
