Maumelle’s month on the road continues this Friday when the Hornets travel to Vilonia for a 7 p.m. Friday kickoff.
Maumelle enters the game 1-1 after last Friday’s 47-44 overtime loss to Joe T. Robinson, while Vilonia is 1-0 after beating Greene County Tech, 56-17.
The Robinson loss is going to sting for a bit for Maumelle as the Hornets were up 41-21 early in the fourth quarter before the Senators started to rally, and scored three touchdowns, with the last coming in the game’s final minute.
Robinson could have won the game in regulation but it was Jaiden Worsham who kept that from happening when he blocked an extra-point kick in the final seconds, to keep the score at 41-41.
Things looked promising in overtime, as Nico Davillier went into the game as a wildcat quarterback as the Hornets started the possession at the 10-yard line. Davillier took the ball to the five-yard line on the first rush, but the 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end went backwards on the second rush attempt and Weston Pierce, who had already thrown three touchdowns at that point, came back in at quarterback.
The third down play was for naught, and that set up a field goal from John Bruchagen that gave Maumelle the 44-41 lead but Robinson scored on its first play to give the Senators the win.
Now, Maumelle heads back to the road with a trip to Vilonia, with the next three games away. The first home game for the Hornets, assuming the turf is ready, is set for Oct. 1 when Maumelle hosts Beebe. The Hornets only have three home games this season, turf and Covid permitting.
