Football: Maumelle cruises past Jacksonville, hosts Pulaski Academy this Friday
www.arkansasnewsroom.com
Maumelle had its best offensive showing of the year last week against Jacksonville in a 49-15 and the Hornets will need to keep the touchdowns flowing as defending state champ Pulaski Academy comes to town this week.
The win at Jacksonville essentially puts Maumelle in the playoffs that begin on Nov. 12.
The Hornets are tied for third place with White Hall, while PA leads the 5A-Central, with Little Rock Christian in at No. 2.
But the next three games, starting with PA, will determine playoff seeding. The top two teams start at home, while the No. 3 and 4 seeds travel. This year, the Central is matched up with the West and as it stands now, the top two teams in that league are Greenbrier and Vilonia. Both are currently undefeated and the annual Faulkner County Battle won’t be until Nov. 5 when the teams meet up.
At Jacksonville, Maumelle dominated all phases of the game, scoring touchdowns on the ground, through the air and on special teams, plus played suffocating defense that shut Jacksonville out in the second half.
The first touchdown came when Jessie Knight scampered in from 15 yards with 9:38 remaining in the first quarter. On the first play of the second quarter the now familiar combination of Weston Pierce to Roderick Watts showed up as Pierce hit Watts for a 38-yard touchdown and that was followed by Pierce finding Hunter Specht for a 31 yard catch and run for the score with 9:29 remaining in the second quarter.
The third quarter was more of the same as Jason Crawford scored from three yards out and on the first play of the fourth quarter, Pierce hit John Bruchhagen for 16 yards and the touchdown.
It was a good night for Bruchhagen, who, in addition to the receiving touchdown, was seven of seven on extra point attempts.
Maumelle added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter when Jordan Candler scored from seven yards out and the last was when Crawford returned a punt 52 yards for the touchdown with 4:34 remaining in the game.
It was Crawford’s second touchdown of the game in a balanced effort that saw six Hornets score against Jacksonville.
Player of the Game: QuarterbackWeston Pierce passed for 207 yards and three touchdowns in his best individual showing this season. Pierce has now passed for 1,310 yards and 14 touchdowns in seven gamess.
Play of the Game: Jason Crawford’s waterbugged through the Jacksonville punting team, zigging and zagging for 52 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was Crawford’s second touchdown of the game, as he had rushed for one earlier.
