The first North Little Rock game under new head coach Randy Sandefur was a rousing success as the ‘Cats rolled past Springdale Har-Ber, 58-28, last Friday and will travel to Fayetteville to take on the Purple ‘Dogs this week.
Fayetteville is 1-1 on the season and lost last week to Owasso, Oklahoma. The Purple ‘Dogs are led by former Razorback quarterback Casey Dick, who previously coached at Van Buren, and North Little Rock won last season’s matchup, 35-17.
Hooten’s Arkansas Football preseason magazine picked Fayetteville to finish third in the 7A-West.
As for North Little Rock, the ‘Cats ran wild on offense against Har-Ber to start the season with the win. North Little Rock compiled 562 yards of total offense, on 66 plays, to average 8.5 yards per touch.
As a team, North Little Rock finished with 310 yards passing and 252 yards rushing.
Quarterback Malachi Gober threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns on a 16 for 26 and one interception night, while Torrance Moore rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries to lead the ground game. Felix Wade was the team’s leading receiver with five catches for 68 yards and one touchdown. Others catching touchdowns were Johnny Lewis and Jiquori Stewart, who also rushed for a score.
North Little Rock put the game away in the third quarter, when they scored 28 points and went up 52-21 going into the fourth.
Play of the game: Torrance Moore broke loose for a 53 yard touchdown run with 7:48 remaining in the third quarter. It was the second of four touchdowns in the quarter for North Little Rock as the ‘Cats put Har-Ber away for good.
Player of the game: Junior quarterback Malachi Gober is listed at 5-foot-8 but his impact was huge, throwing for 237 yards and three touchdowns in the eventual rout.
What’s next: North Little Rock travels to Fayetteville this Friday.
