With Maumelle’s 42-14 loss to Pulaski Academy last Friday in the rearview mirror, the Hornets are still well-positioned to make the playoffs with two games remaining in the regular season.
This Friday is a trip to White Hall, in Jefferson County, and the week after Watson Chapel comes to Maumelle.
Win both, makes Maumelle the No. 3 seed in the playoffs that begin on Nov. 12. Split, and the Hornets are the No. 4 seed.
White Hall enters this Friday with a 6-2 overall record, while Watson Chapel is winless on the season.
As noted previously, the 5A-Central is matched against the 5A-West for playoff purposes, with the No. 4 seed traveling to the No. 1 seed and the No. 3 seed playing that league’s No. 2 seed.
Greenbrier and Vilonia are both in that 5A-West standings and both are undefeated.
Something has to give though as the two Faulkner County schools face each other on Nov. 5 in a Week 10 game while Maumelle has the night off and an extra week to get ready for the playoffs.
Against Pulaski Academy, the defending 5A state champs, Maumelle struggled offensively, while the Bruins were up 20-0 before Maumelle scored its first touchdown in the second quarter when quarterback Weston Pierce ran in from one-yard out, followed by John Bruchhagen hitting the extra point.
PA added another touchdown before the half and the Bruins were up 28-7 at the break.
The Bruins kept the gas pedal pushed down, and scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter.
Maumelle’s final touchdown came on the first play of the fourth quarter when Jessie Knight broke loose for a 62-yard run for the touchdown. Bruchhagen followed with the extra point to set the final margin.
Joseph Himon, PA’s star running back, who has committed to Northwestern, rushed for just 15 yards on two carries and didn’t have a catch in the win but quarterback Charlie Fiser more than made up the difference as he passed for 404 yards for the Bruins.
Play of the Game: Jessie Knight took off for 62 yards for a touchdown and Knight rushed for 128 yards on 13 carries.
Player of the Game: Kicker John Bruchhagen was perfect on extra point attempts and is now Maumelle’s leading scorer this season with 49 points. Bruchhagen, who also plays wide receiver, passed fellow wideout Roderick Watts, who has 48 points.
