With just one game remaining in the regular season, Maumelle is currently fifth in the 5A-Central standings but the Hornets aren’t likely to stay there.
Maumelle, 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference, hosts winless Watson Chapel this Friday, then the Hornets get Week 10 off as they’ve already played 10 games this season.
If Maumelle wins this Friday, that will move them up into the fourth spot and will make the playoffs that start on Nov. 12.
The other team is Beebe and the Badgers have two games remaining, a trip to league leading Pulaski Academy this Friday and the following week, they host White Hall, currently second in the standings.
Maumelle, by virtue of its 35-17 win against Beebe on Oct. 1 has the conference tie-breaker and the Hornets could still limp into the postseason even if they lost this week.
As noted previously, the 5A-Central is matched against the 5A-West for playoff purposes, with the No. 4 seed traveling to the No. 1 seed and the No. 3 seed playing that league’s No. 2 seed.
Greenbrier and Vilonia are both tied for first in that 5A-West standings and both are undefeated.
Something has to give though as the two Faulkner County schools face each other on Nov. 5 in a Week 10 game.
Against White Hall, Maumelle struggled on offense and were held to only six first downs in the game. White Hall was up 24-12 at the half and then put the game away with two third quarter touchdowns.
Maumelle scored in the first quarter when quarterback Weston Piece hit a familiar target in Roderick Watts for a 30-yard catch and run for a touchdown, but the two-point conversion failed.
The second Maumelle touchdown came on the final play of the second quarter when backup quarterback Paxton Compton took it in from four yards out. The two-point conversion again failed.
