Give Kids a Smile Day planned by the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine
The Lyon College School of Dental Medicine might be new but they’re hitting the ground running with the school’s first public event planned for this Friday.
Called Give Kids a Smile Day it will start at 9 a.m. and is described as “part of a national initiative aimed at ensuring access to quality oral health care for all children.”
It will be held at 5 Allied Drive, Building 5, the dental school’s Little Rock in the Riverdale neighborhood and better known as the former Alltel campus.
The event is free and will include:
Oral health screenings for children and adults
Fluoride varnish applications
Oral health care education
There’s also activities geared to children and among them are tooth fairy story time, a DJ dance party and face painting.
Sponsors include: Delta Dental, First Community Bank, Quality Dental Lab, Benco Dental and Nobel Biocare.
“We’re excited to bring Give Kids a Smile Day to central Arkansas and provide families with valuable resources in a fun, welcoming environment,” said Dr. Meagan Inclan, pediatric dentist, Lyon College School of Dental Medicine faculty member, and event organizer. “For many children, this may be their first dental visit, so we want to create a positive, educational experience that helps set the tone for lifelong oral health.”
Founding dean of the dental school is Dr. Burke Soffe and a number of local dentists have been recruited to serve as faculty. Among them are Sherwood’s Jay Powell, who also happens to be my dentist.

Health
Pandemic deaths unknown
The state Department of Health didn’t update the state’s dashboard this week, again, and deaths still total 532 for the past year. There’s no tab created for 2025 either and the virus has now killed 14,162 Arkansans since the pandemic began then. That would mean the pandemic death toll has now passed Marion’s 13,635 people, the state’s 29th largest city.
