Maumelle: Hornets get double overtime win at Beebe

Maumelle opened the conference portion of its season with a banger as the Hornets won at Beebe, 95-87, on Tuesday night.

It was plenty of free basketball for a limited attendance crowd as it took not one but two overtimes to get the win for Maumelle.

Coach Michael Shook's mantra is, "we play fast ... we play together" and Maumelle was both on Tuesday night.

Key to the win was junior shooting guard Carl Daughtery Jr., who finished the game with 37 points, while pulling down seven rebounds and added five assists. Daughtery is a Division I prospect, who already has college offers.

Wherever he lands, they'll get a shooter, as Daughtery made nine three-pointers in the win.

Senior wing Josh Denton wasn't far behind with 25 points, while pulling down six rebounds. The last few days have been pretty good for Denton as he received another scholarship offer. This time to Arkansas-Monticello.

Senior wing Darvis Rasberry, another college prospect, also had a good night with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Maumelle.

Maumelle is now 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the 5A-Central, while a solid Beebe squad stands at 7-3.

The Hornets host Little Rock Parkview this Friday in what could be the state's best basketball game that night and it should be a thrilling next couple of weeks with a home game against a traditionally solid Jacksonville team, and another home game against Sylvan Hills and Nick Smith, who is considered one of the country's best high school players.

Covid permitting of course.

Speaking of, Maumelle's girls didn't play on Tuesday night as the game at Beebe was postponed due to the coronavirus. It has not yet been rescheduled.

Maumelle is 3-3 overall and last played Dec. 29 when they defeated El Dorado, 76-70.
