If it wasn’t for bad luck, Maumelle would have no luck at all.
The Hornets, now 1-4 on the season, are finally back at home this Friday night when Maumelle hosts Beebe in a 5A-Central game. It will also, fittingly enough, be Homecoming at the high school.
So, all in all, not the worst way to end a month on the road.
This is the first conference game for Beebe and the Badgers are 1-3 on the year.
At the halfway point in the season, Maumelle has had four agonizingly close losses as opponents have scored 142 points on the defense, while the Hornets offense has scored 138 points. When as a team, you’re averaging nearly 28 points a game, that should be enough, it just hasn’t.
Against Little Rock Christian last week, it was more of the same as the Warriors jumped out to a 16-3 lead at the half, only to watch Maumelle turn up the offense and quarterback Weston Pierce go four yards for the touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Maumelle then forced the punt and the offense was clicking.
Pierce found Hunter Specht for a 45 yard catch and run, then back-to-back runs got the ball to the 15 and in the red zone but Christian forced a fourth down, and then Pierce was sacked to end the drive.
Maumelle again forced the Warriors to punt and the Hornets got the ball back on the 13-yard line with 2:47 remaining and the game on the line.
Pierce immediately found Jordan Candler for a six-yard catch and then on 3rd and 4, Pierce hit Amarie Rogers for a 28-yard catch and run.
The Warriors defense stiffened and on 4th down, Pierce’s pass was tipped away by a defensive back to seal the win.
Little Rock Christian went 5-0 on the season with the win.
