In a game that wasn’t decided until the final minute, Maumelle defeated Russellville, 59-50, in the Class 5A boys state tournament quarterfinals on Saturday at Hot Springs.
The win puts the Hornets into the semifinals at 7 p.m. on Monday against Sylvan Hills and also at Hot Springs. This is Maumelle’s second consecutive trip to the semifinals and the finals will be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 20.
The other 5A semifinal is Little Rock Parkview and Jonesboro at 1 p.m. on Monday.
Maumelle (19-6) made six of eight free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Key to the shooting was junior forward Nico Davillier who made four of those six, while Darvis Rasberry was two of two.
Davillier, who is also a top college football prospect, finished the game with 16 points and added 11 rebounds.
Rasberry was also good for 16, and Carl Daughtery Jr. added 14. Josh Denton just missed double figures and finished with 9 points.
