Maumelle Planning Commission to meet tonight
The Maumelle Planning Commission will have its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight at City Hall.
For the complete agenda, click here.
Back on the agenda as old business is the Gateway Park Site Plan that is being proposed for the old court complex and fire station.
That building would be torn down and the park would take its place, eventually. The wheels on the bus of city government turn slowly at times.
In new business, there's an update to the city's master street plan, to make it align with the county's land use update project. The area impacted would be along Crystal Hill Road, a mishmash of an area that Maumelle, North Little Rock and Pulaski County all have bits and pieces of.
There's also an agenda item for a Smalling Road Subdivision at 14723 Smalling Road. The subdivision would cover a little more than 34 acres and is proposed to have 166 lots.
The proposal got four public comments, three in favor and one wondering what was going on that property.
Tonight’s meeting is open to the public and will be streamed on the city’s YouTube channel.

Maumelle's Daughtery transfers to UC Davis
After two successful basketball seasons at the University of Central Arkansas, Maumelle High graduate Carl Daughtery Jr.decided it was time for a change.
Daughtery, above, entered the transfer portal as the UCA basketball program was moving on from its former coach, Anthony Boone, to John Shulman, who was most recently at Alabama-Huntsville and before that, Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Daughtery saw action in 29 games this past season with 10 starts. He would have been one of the better Bears coming back to Scottie Pippen Court as he was third on the team in scoring with nearly 10 points a game.
His best game was against Tulsa last season where he had 19 points. As a freshman, he played in 23 games and became a dependable three-point shooter.
UC Davis went 20-13 last season and lost in the Big West Conference championship game.
Daughtery was an all-state performer at Maumelle where he averaged 18 points a game. He also scored over 1,000 career points for coach Michael Shook.
Garland on the move
Colby Garland only spent one season at Maumelle, his senior year, after a stellar and state-championship winning run at Magnolia.
Garland, above, who played last season at Drake, also entered the transfer portal despite playing in the NCAA Tournament and was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference's All-Bench team.
Garland played in 31 games and averaged nearly 6 points per game. He's transferring to Longwood, a Division I school that competes in the Big South. Hoops heads may recall Longwood also played in the NCAA Tournament last season and lost in the first round to Houston. But you're forgiven if you thought Longwood was one of those D-III's scattered around the south.
Carl Daughtery Jr. and Garland were teammates at Maumelle as the latter spent a post-grad season at Link Year Prep in Branson, Missouri.
Portal be portalling
Sherwood's Corey Washington, who spent his senior season at North Little Rock, also hopped into the transfer portal after spending the last two seasons at St. Peter's, the Division I school and March Madness darling.
Washington was all-conference last season for the Peacocks after averaging nearly 16 points a game. He previously was on the conference's all-freshman team.
He's now at Wichita State where coach Paul Mills said of him, "he is a dynamic player who can defend multiple positions, rebound at a high rate and play in a manner where he is ultra aggressive in transition and in the half court."
This might explain the Wichita State gear recently spotted at the North Little Rock T.J. Maxx, but unlikely as the T.J. Maxx/Marshalls/Ross Dress for Less universe is a chaotic and random one.
Not on the move
North Little Rock's Collin Moore returns for his senior season at Grand Canyon University.
Moore, above, led Grand Canyon to a 30-5 record overall and a second round NCAA Tournament loss to Alabama.
The 6-foot-5 guard started all 35 of those games and was good for nearly 10 points a game.
Sports

Stafford Gray won last week's Maumelle Classic held at the Maumelle Country Club.
Gray also won the Classic in 2017 and 2018, becoming the first player to win three titles.
He also tied the tournament record at 11 under.
This was the 49th annual Maumelle Classic.

Pandemic deaths climb
The state Department of Health again didn’t have a Covid report available for this week but numbers for the year have finally been updated. The state’s dashboard says there’s been 294 Covid-related deaths in 2024. Here, though, the numbers get a little tricky as the month by month tally shows 290 deaths and there’s no deaths showing for July. Previously, the state said there was 276 Covid deaths in 2024, The virus has now killed 13,938 Arkansans since the pandemic began four years ago. That would mean the pandemic death toll has now passed Marion’s 13,635 people, the state’s 29th largest city.
