North Little Rock: School Board calls special meeting for tonight

The School Board of the North Little Rock School District will have a special call meeting at 5:30 p.m. tonight.

The meeting is open and will be livestreamed on the district’s YouTube channel.

The agenda for the meeting can be viewed here.

Closed to the public will be an executive session and the School Board is expected to discuss Act 1002, the new state law that says districts and other governmental organizations aren’t allowed to have mask mandates. This is in conflict with the CDC order that requires students to wear masks on school buses, as first reported nationally here.

Some Board members have been in conversation with attorney Tom Mars, who is planning a lawsuit against the state with the intention of overturning Act 1002 and the board is expected to take up potential responses by the district.

Listed agenda items include personnel and student transfers. Nick Smith and Corey Washington, who both played high school basketball at Sylvan Hills last season, both announced on Twitter this month that they have moved to North Little Rock and intend to play for coach Johnny Rice and the ‘Cats this season. The district would have to accept both as legal transfers.

Smith and Washington were both All-State in basketball, with Smith being considered a 5-Star recruit and one of the country’s top prospects. They would join Kel’el Ware, who is also a 5-Star recruit and one of the country’s top prospects. Giving North Little Rock, potentially, one of the best all-time high school lineups.
