The Maumelle Hornets improved to 6-2 on the season, after racking up three recent wins against the likes of Hot Springs, Conway and Izard County Consolidated. The most recent win at Hot Springs, where Maumelle defeated the Trojans, 73-59. Key to the Saturday night win was Carl Daughtery Jr., as the junior guard led all scorers with 21 points, mostly on the strength of five 3-pointers.
Daughtery, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound shooting guard, has already been offered a scholarship by the University of Central Arkansas and is also getting looks from other Division I schools.
Denton, 6-5 and has a 4.2 grade point average, scored 24 points, pulled down six rebounds and contributed three steals in a strong defensive effort, coach Michael Shook said. Also in triple figures, Shook said, was senior guard Darvis Rasberry with 14 points and he was also the team’s leading rebounder with 12 boards. Daughtery added 11 points, while he and Rasberry both had four assists each to lead the team in that category. In the 87-83 win against Izard County, it was a familiar trio of names for Maumelle. Daughtery had 24 points, while Rasberry finished with 19 points and Denton chipped in 12.
Maumelle has Christmas week off and return to action, or at least scheduled to return to action, next Monday, Dec. 28, with a trip to Little Rock Southwest against the Gryphons. The next night, Dec. 29, is a trip to El Dorado, with the rest of the year off as conference action starts with a trip to Beebe on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
