The high school basketball postseason starts this week and all but North Little Rock are looking at win or go home games in district and regional tournaments
The 6A boy’s tournament starts March 9, while the 6A girl’s tournament also starts on March 9.
For Maumelle and 5A, there’s not normally district tournaments as the seedings are determined by regular season play with the top four teams from each conference getting in.
This hasn’t been a regular season by any stretch, so this year there’s a district tournament.
5A
BOYS -- Maumelle is 15-4 overall and 8-2 in the conference. The Hornets enter the 5A-Central district tournament as the No. 3 seed and will host Beebe on Tuesday.
The Hornets were upset on Friday night by Benton, 64-61, on a last-second three-pointer, while conference champion Sylvan Hills defeated Little Parkview in double overtime to give the Bears the No. 1 seed and a home game against Little Rock Hall.
Parkview and Maumelle now both have two conference losses, but the Patriots played one more conference game, and are the No. 2 seed. They face Benton on Tuesday. The other first-round game is Little Rock Christian at Jacksonville
The top-seeded team is at home throughout the tournament and Maumelle/Beebe and Parkview/Benton are the bottom half of the bracket, while Sylvan Hills/Hall and Jacksonville/Christian are in the top half.
Winners automatically make the state tournament in Hot Springs the following week.
If the seedings hold, Maumelle would travel to Parkview for the semifinals on Thursday, with the championship and consolation games to be played on Friday. All games will tip at 6 p.m.
The championship and consolation games will determine the seedings for the state tournament.
GIRLS -- In the 5A-Central, Little Rock Christian has already qualified for the state tournament as Little Rock Hall didn’t finish the season.
That leaves three spots for six teams with Maumelle still in the mix as the No. 7 seed. They’ll face No. 2 seed Sylvan Hills at 6 p.m. Monday with the winner advancing to the state tournament. The other game in the bottom half of the bracket is Beebe at Benton.
In the top half of the bracket, Christian will face the winner of Parkview and Jacksonville.
The semifinals will be Wednesday with the championship and consolation games set for Friday. All games will tip at 6 p.m.
3A
Central Arkansas Christian hasn’t played a basketball game since before Valentine’s Day as snow, plus covid cancellations wrecked the schedule for both the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs.
The break, that started Feb. 13, ends this week as both squads will play on Wednesday.
BOYS -- Matt Hall’s Mustangs (13-6, 11-3), are the top seed from the 3A-6 and will face Jessieville in the opening round of the regional at CAC at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
That first-round regional win would put the Mustangs back in the state tournament for the first time since 2015.
GIRLS -- Steve Quattlebaum’s Lady Mustangs (17-0, 14-0), the top seed from the 3A-6, will meet Lamar (17-6, 9-5), fourth from the 3A-5, at 4:30 p.m. in the opening round of the 3A Region 3 Tournament at Episcopal Collegiate.
A win would move CAC to the regional semifinals, with all four semifinalists advancing to the Class 3A State Tournament.
2A
Maumelle Charter is another school a game away from the state tournament as the Falcons head to the regionals at Melbourne in a win or go home game.
The Falcons, as the No. 4 seed, will face host Melbourne in a first-round game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday with the winner advancing to the semifinals at 7 p.m. on Friday and the championship game at 7 p.m. and consolation game at 1 p.m. to follow on Saturday.
The regionals start at 1 p.m on Wednesday with 2A-5 champ Lisa Academy North against Cedar Ridge.
Other first round games include:
White County Central vs. Bigelow: Thursday, 1 p.m.
