Matt Hall’s Mustangs lost a conference showdown at Helena-West Helena last week, 57-52; but bounced back with a 49-31 decision at Dollarway on Tuesday to settle at 6-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
“Helena shot the ball well, and they’ve got some really good size,” Hall said. “I thought we did some good things in that game; we just didn’t play well enough to win. One of the things I love about basketball is that you typically get what you deserve.
“We played well enough to make it a good game, but not well enough to win.”
The Mustangs won the opening quarter, 17-16, but fell behind at the break, 35-27. They pulled within 42-38 after three.
Karsen Richard led the Mustangs with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Jackson Richmond added 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.
At Dollarway on Tuesday, CAC built leads of 13-8 after one, 25-13 at the half and 38-19 after three.
“We really responded after Helena,” Hall said. “Dollarway was huge. They had four or five that were 6-4, 6-4, 6-5, but we pretty much controlled the game from the beginning.”
Tyler Williams was perfect from the field (six of six) for 17 points in 17 minutes. Richard added 16 points and 11 rebounds — his third straight double-double.
Hall said Richard had grown as a player over the last few years.
“As a sophomore, we viewed him as a shooter, and last year he played outside on the floor, but this year he’s grown some, and I think he’s really grown into his body,” Hall said of his senior. “He’s figured out. He’s just a big, strong kid who likes to compete and throw his body around.”
Through the five conference games, Richard is averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds.
“Right now he’s the anchor of our team,” Hall said. “He’s a senior leader and playing well. That’s not to take away from anybody. The last few games Jackson Richmond has also played really well. To have two seniors leading your team is what you look for.”
The Mustangs will travel to Palestine-Wheatley (7-7, 3-2) on Tuesday.
“They’re tied for third in the league, and it’s at their place, so it’ll be a big one to win,” Hall said. “Any time you can win on the road is big.”
