Maumelle beat Beebe, 35-10, last Friday in Homecoming at the school but there’s a more important game this week at Jacksonville.
The winner of the game would move into No. 4 in the 5A-Central conference standings and would be guaranteed a playoff game. The loser still has a path to the playoffs, but would require wins against 5-1 White Hall and Pulaski Academy, 4-1 and the defending 5A state champs.
Given recent and current history, that would be a tall order for any team but PA is at Maumelle on Oct. 15 and a trip to White Hall follows on Oct. 22.
The playoffs begin Nov. 12 and the No. 4 team from the 5A-Central would travel to the winner of the 5A-West. The brackets can be viewed by clicking here.
Against Beebe, it was Jessie Knight’s night as the senior running back rushed for two touchdowns and 140 yards on just 11 carries.
Knight got Maumelle on the scoreboard with a 2-yard rush with 5:16 remaining in the second quarter and then followed that with a 17-yard scoring run with 1:35 left.
What followed was a frantic finish of the half when Beebe responded with a 68-yard catch and run for the touchdown, to make it, 14-10, with 1:23. Maumelle had a chance and took advantage of it on the ensuing drive as quarterback Weston Piece hit Roderick Watts for an 8-yard catch and Beebe was penalized for a late hit. That was followed by a 20-yard rush by Knight, and Pierce capped the drive with a 24-yard throw to Hunter Specht for a touchdown with :37 left in the half. The score put Maumelle up, 21-10, going into halftime and the game was effectively over.
The third quarter started with Pierce finding Watts for a 24-yard catch for a touchdown. It was the seventh receiving touchdown of the year for Watts and Pierce went past the 1,000 yard passing mark as well in the game and now has 1,103 yards on the year.
The final Maumelle touchdown came when Jordan Candler went in from 4 yards out with 3:56 left in the third quarter and set the game’s final score after John Bruchhagen’s kick was good. Bruchhagen was perfect on the night as he was 5-of-5 on extra points.
