Maumelle travels to undefeated Greenbrier this Friday in the start of the Class 5A playoffs.
The Hornets are 4-6 overall and were the No. 4 seed out of the 5A-Central.
Greenbrier is 10-0 on the year and won the 5A-West after beating Vilonia last Friday.
Maumelle was off last Friday and are entering the game with fresh legs. That might be good for the Hornets as the offense has been keyed by senior running back Jesse Knight, who has been putting up monster numbers and was over 300 all-purpose yards against Watson Chapel in Week 9.
Greenbrier is led by senior quarterback Cooper Wilcox, who has passed for 1,911 yards and 23 touchdowns, while rushing for 862 yards with 16 touchdowns on the ground.
Against Vilonia last week, Wilcox accounted for four touchdowns, with 214 yards and three scores passing, with 72 yards and the final touchdown rushing.
Greenbrier has a total of seven players on the watch lists for the 2021 Farm Bureau Insurance Awards released on Wednesday, while Maumelle had three players.
Greenbrier’s players are Wilcox, Josh Robinson and Thatcher Strack on offense and Nick Huett, Jacob Mathis, Preston Riddle and Dawson Spencer on defense.
For Maumelle it was Knight and Arkansas football commits Andrew Chamblee and Nico Davillier.
The winner of the game Friday night will face the winner of Wynne-Hot Springs Lakeside in the second round and the brackets can be viewed by clicking here.
Including the scrimmage against Ozark and this Friday’s game, nine of those 12 schools are in the playoffs in Arkansas or Louisiana, making Maumelle’s schedule among the state’s most difficult.
