Central Arkansas Christian shook off the rust from its opening loss and will welcome Mayflower to Mustang Mountain on Friday.
This one was supposed to have been the season opener, but the Eagles had Covid complications, so the game was rescheduled for this week.
Tommy Shoemaker’s Mustangs are 1-1 after falling to Riverview in a shocker, 41-7; and knocking off Carlisle last week, 55-46.
“Every win’s a good win,” Shoemaker said. “We did a great job up front, and (quarterback) Tyler (Williams) did a great job of running the football. We handed it a few times to other people, and we threw it four or five times. That was a little different look for us, but we were very efficient and took care of the football. We definitely cleaned up a bunch of stuff (from the Riverview game).
CAC built a big lead, but the Bison, to their credit, never gave up. The score wasn’t indicative of the game.
“It was a combination of their kids kept playing hard and we let up a little bit,” Shoemaker said. “We’ve got to learn not to do that. They kept competing until the end, and we weren’t playing with quite the same energy level.”
Williams, an all-state running back converted to quarterback this season, accounted for 349 yards and six touchdowns, rushing 28 times for 257 yards and five TDs and completing seven of nine passes for 92 yards and another score.
“He’s just very explosive,” Shoemaker said. “He’s hard to bring down, and he just kind of makes the whole thing go for us. He does a nice job when we ask him to throw it.”
The coach praised the work of the offensive line, particularly Jace Love, Ayden Fitts, Andrew Teer, Andrew Milam and Will Cauley.
“We got some good movement up front,” he said.
Mayflower is 0-2, having lost to Class 4A schools Southside Batesville, 42-7; and Fountain Lake, 49-13.
The Mustangs prevailed in last year’s season-opener, 35-20.
Mayflower finished 2-8 last year and was picked to finish fourth in the 4-3A, according to Hooten’s Arkansas Football’s preseason poll of league coaches.
“They’re athletic and they do a really good job of running the football,” Shoemaker said. “They’re physical. Defensively, they attack you and get after you pretty good. When we were going to match up in Week 1, I thought this would be a really good ball game, and I still think it will be.”
Keys for the Mustangs?
“We’re going to have to stop the run on defense, be physical and good tacklers,” he said. “We made some strides on that last week, but we still need to improve there. Offensively, we’re going to have to run the football. We have to be physical up front again.
“But our passing game and some of the other things we do off the running game are going to have to keep improving. People are going to eventually figure out what we’re doing.”
