Among the wrestlers who have qualified are Maumelle’s Nathan Juhl and Ember Smith.
Juhl is also a football player and signed to play in college at the University of Arkansas-Monticello. He’s also undefeated as a wrestler this season and is a heavy favorite in his weight class for a state title.
Smith, a junior, won a state title last year in the first girl’s state tournament in the 108 pound weight class and is expected to again wrestle for another title this year.
Winning state championships is a family thing for Smith as her brother, Dregan, won four consecutive state titles in his high school career with the first two at Pulaski Academy and the final two for Maumelle.
This is also Ember Smith’s third season to compete as a wrestler and competed in the Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota in the summer between her freshman and sophomore years.
The fields have not yet been set but among the wrestlers to watch in this year’s program are Maumelle Charter’s Colin Hornday in 126, and Luke Garrison in 170.
