In a game that wasn’t decided until the final seconds, Maumelle hung on to beat Marion, 60-58, in the first round of the Class 5A boys state tournament here in Hot Springs.
Marion had the 58-57 lead with 25 seconds remaining in the game. That’s when Maumelle went to work.
Carl Daugherty Jr. got the inbound and the ball was worked inside to Darvis Rasberry where he was fouled with 2.2 seconds remaining. Rasberry made the first and tied the game up at 58-all. Rasberry’s second attempt rattled out and Marion got the ball and called timeout.
That wasn’t a great idea since Marion was out of timeouts and the officials whistled the Patriots for the technical.
It was Riley Wade’s turn to shoot free throws, in front of the Maumelle student section, with just 1.3 seconds remaining on the clock. Wade missed the first but made the second free throw and Maumelle was in the lead, 59-58.
The Hornets got the ensuing possession and Daugherty, who was everywhere in the second half for Maumelle, went to the line with just .6 seconds remaining and set the final margin by hitting one of two free throws.
Daugherty led all scorers with 19 points, 13 of those came in the second half. The junior guard started the game but missed most of the first quarter after getting a cut above his right eye.
Rasberry was good for 14, while Josh Denton was also in double figures with 13. Nico Davillier added 8, and Wade had 6.
Timothy McDonald Jr. had 18 to lead Marion, while Ryan Forrest had 17.
Maumelle will now face Russellville in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
