The bracket for the 5A-Central tournament is in and it is something
Maumelle, 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference has been first or second all season in the standings. But for the conference tournament, the Hornets are the No. 3 seed, while Little Rock Parkview, a team Maumelle beat 85-80, is the No. 2 seed.
"They have more conference wins," Maumelle coach Michael Shook said. "They are 8-1 and we are 7-1."
Covid cancellations and this week's wintry weather have been the drivers of a topsy-turvy basketball season.
"When we went on quarantine," Shook said. "Our district made us miss three games even though the [Arkansas Department of Health] said we could come back on that Friday to play Hall."
But those cancellations aren't equal.
"When Parkview went on quarantine," Shook said. "They only had to miss two games and one of those was against us. So they missed two for quarantine purposes and we missed four. Then with the winter weather we were able to play last Friday and they weren't. So we caught up by one game, and we both obviously missed both games this week."
The result was, "we ended up playing one game less and the seedings were based on total conference wins."
The conference champ is Sylvan Hills and the top three teams all have one conference loss but all to each other.
So, as it stands now, Maumelle will host Little Rock Christian at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The Hornets just defeated the Warriors, 72-69, on Feb. 12
The winner moves on to the 5A state tournament in March and also into the conference semifinals where they will face the winner of Parkview and Jacksonville.
The semifinals game will be played at 6 p.m. at the highest seeded winner, and the finals will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The losers of the semifinal games will also play at 2 p.m. on Saturday to determine seeding for the state tournament.
GIRLS: Maumelle, as the No. 7 seed, will play at No. 2 seed Sylvan Hills at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The winner will advance to the 5A state tournament in Hot Springs the first week of March.
