The North Little Rock Police Department announced the death of Sgt. J.L. “Buck” Dancy due to Covid-19 on Wednesday.
Dancy, 62, had been with the department since 1985 and the death is considered in the line of duty, making it the first of its kind in Arkansas.
“Sgt. Dancy was The Rock of that unit,” said interim Chief of Police Tracy Roulston of Dancy’s work with Crimes against Persons Unit of the Investigations Division, where he was a supervisor on two different occasions.
“He helped young Detectives become seasoned professionals,” Roulston added. “However, I think his best attribute was his ability to lean on his faith and help the families of victims of violent crimes. He has affected so many people.
“We are all still in shock.”
Dancy’s family had deep roots in North Little Rock and in public service. His late father, Jim, was a lifelong resident of the city where he was a firefighter for 27 years and retired as a captain, while his late mother, Virginia, was a registered nurse, who worked in the Baptist Health system and for the VA. Dancy’s father passed in 2019, while his mother died this past January. The couple had been married 67 years and were members of Levy Baptist Church.
