Snowmageddon
The snow started falling on Sunday as the temperatures dropped across the state.
While somewhat warmer on Wednesday, it barely cracked freezing and sunny enough to cause some of the accumulated snow to melt.
While the weather outside was frightful, for a new pup seeing its first snow, it was quite delightful.
That’s sort of a problem, the National Weather Service office in North Little Rock, advised as that meant with colder temperatures returning that night and continuing into the morning, the melt off would freeze on the streets and roads around Arkansas, causing what’s known as “black ice.”
The ice freeze clears, and the pavement underneath is what provides the color.
As for the snow, most of Pulaski County got between 2 to 3 inches, while rural west Pulaski County got more, and in the 3 to 4 inch range. Other parts of Arkansas, mostly in the state’s northern hill country, got in excess of six inches of snow.
The front also brought bitterly cold weather to Arkansas with numerous locations setting all-time lows.
Among those was North Little Rock, where it was 6 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the previous record low for the day of 11 degrees, set in 1979.
That was the lowest recorded temperature in central Arkansas, even though Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville recorded a low of 8 degrees.
School districts across central Arkansas, including North Little Rock and Pulaski County Special school districts as well as the Academics Plus system that includes Maumelle Charter, have been closed for most of the week.
First it was Monday, for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, with weather conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday keeping school closed. And did we mention that the forecast is for freezing rain, and that “black ice” Wednesday night and into Thursday morning?
Well, school is closed for Thursday as well.
Friday?
We’ll see.
It wasn’t just schools.
The Maumelle City Council that was scheduled for Tuesday night, will now be next Monday, Jan. 22, with the same agenda.
Government offices are a mix of full closures on Thursday with some opening on a planned two-hour delay. That could change based on the amount of precipitation that falls on Wednesday and into the morning.
The city of North Little Rock will continue to operate a warming center at the North Little Rock Community Center at 2700 Willow St. The plan is to keep it open through Monday morning.
The hours of operation are:
Thursday, 6 p.m. – Friday, 9 a.m.
Friday, 6 p.m. – Saturday 9 a.m.
Saturday , 6 p.m. - Sunday, 9 a.m.
Sunday , 6 p.m. – Monday, 9 a.m.
The city is encouraging those using the warming center to bring their own food, drinks and entertainment. Pets are allowed and vending machines are available. If bringing a pet, please pack food and a water dish. For more information, call 501-791-8541.
Trash trucks available
The city of North Little Rock will have sanitation trucks available for residents to dispose of any trash and waste that was unable to be picked up earlier this week due to the inclement weather. The trucks will be stationed at the following locations on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Truck Locations:
Stone Links Clubhouse - Faulkner Lake Road and Hwy 391
Prothro Area at E Bethany and Hwy 161
Pike Plaza Shopping Center at Pike Ave and Pershing Blvd
Sanitation Parking Lot at 13th and Sycamore
Fire Station #9 at Osage and JFK Blvd
Remember, trash and recycling pickup will be delayed this week across central Arkansas. But, remember, when in doubt, set it out. And someone leaves a sticker, throw it in the trash can, that’s right there.

In 5A, which includes Maumelle, it will be a relatively close drive to Searcy.
Maumelle Charter and Central Arkansas Christian are in 3A and that tournament will be a road trip to Elkins.
