Maumelle Charter boys basketball coach Josh Sensabaugh has high expectations for this ongoing season. The Falcons went 16-21 last year and return three starters, and in an upside-down, covid-cancelletion season, the team this year is 3-4, and counting.
A big part of those high expectations are the return of a pair of high scoring junior guards, Caleb Ross and Dustin Gunn, along with senior Chandler Williams. “We returned a lot of key players from last season’s team,” Sensabaugh said, “and added a couple of new players who will help tremendously.”
In addition to Ross, the aptly-named Gunn and Williams, Sensabaugh said other players to watch include: Aidan Hudgens, a junior guard, and junior forwards, Jalen Turner, Owen Counts, Mason Heslep and Aidan Patton. Last season, Sensabaugh, now in his sixth season at the school, and he has turned out some players at the next level. Maumelle Charter currently has four graduates playing college basketball with Jarmall Lovelace Jr. at Central Christian College in McPherson, Kansas; Justin Fudge at Crowley’s Ridge College in Paragould; Brandon El-Amin at Central Baptist College in Conway and Ronnie Peas at Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge.
Sensabaugh guided Maumelle Charter to the state tournament last season.
“We finished fourth in our conference and region,” he said. “Made it to [state] and had a good showing. Last season’s team fought through a lot of adversity early in the season, and really came on strong at the end of the year.”
So far this season, Gunn and Ross have had some strong outings. In a loss last week to Southside Bee Branch, Ross finished with 22 points, and Gunn had 18.
The schedule calls for four more games this month, before coming back to action on Jan. 5 with a scheduled trip to Bigelow. Or at least that’s the plan, the ongoing pandemic has put basketball schedules in a blender.
